World Customs Organization Meetings

Fermin Cuza, International President, World BASC Organization, and Alvaro Alpizar, Chairman of the Board, World BASC Organization, attended the first meeting of the World Customs Organization’s newly constituted Private Sector Consultative Group, in Brussels, Belgium on October 11, 2015.

The meeting was chaired by Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General, World Customs Organization. In his opening remarks, Mr. Mikuriya welcomed the new members, which included organizations and companies such as the International Chamber of Commerce, Microsoft, Caterpillar, AAEI, IATA, FIATA, Procomex, SabMiller, IFCBA, etc. He also outlined his vision and priorities for the PSCG, which coincide with many of our objectives at BASC organization, such as promoting the: security and facilitation of international commerce; fair, efficient and effective revenue collection; protection of society, public health and safety; capacity building of customs administrations; promotion of information exchange between all stakeholders; raising the performance and profile of Customs; conducting research and analysis; and E-Commerce rules and treatment.

Following a presentation by WCO Secretary General Mikuriya, the PSCG members discussed the topics that it would be taking up in its future work, and also dealt with a number of procedural arrangements relating to the Group’s functioning. 

During the meeting, Mr. Cuza and Mr. Alpizar, both made significant contributions to the agenda, while emphasizing the important role of the AEO program to the 3,000 BASC members in promoting facilitation of trade and economic prosperity in the Americas.

Mr. Cuza and Mr. Alpizar also attended the Trade Facilitation Working Group Meeting, now open to PSCG members. The World BASC Organization provided important assistance to this meeting and the work of this Working Group by providing a Spanish translated of the Trade Facilitation Agreement’s draft Customs Predictability and Transparency Guidelines, provided by the BASC Pichincha Chapter.

Mr. Cuza and Mr. Alpizar also met with Sergio Mujica, Deputy Secretary General. During the meeting with Mr. Mujica, the BASC delegation pledged the support of BASC and its 25 Chapters towards the promotion and implementation of the AEO program in the Americas, including setting numerical targets of companies by country to ensure that our support materialized into tangible and measurable results.

The BASC delegation also met with Hector Landeros, Regional Development Manager for the Americas and Caribbean, Capacity Building Directorate. In the meeting with Mr. Landeros, BASC pledged training on supply chain security and other related issues to customs officers assigned to developing AEO programs in all BASC Countries.

On March 30th and 31st, the 2017 World BASC Organization General Assembly was held at the World BASC Organization headquarter offices in Miami. Representatives of the BASC National chapters from Colombia, Costa Rica , Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic and the United States participated in the anual meeting. In this occasion, representatives from the BASC Regional Chapters of Colombia and Ecuador where present as well.

Panama has seized 6.4 tons of illicit drugs so far in 2016
Panamanian authorities have seized 6.4 tons of drugs and arrested 72 alleged drug traffickers so far this year, the Public Safety Ministry reported Sunday.
